Art and Health – February gathering

On Monday 3rd February 2020, we were at Gods House Tower with 27 people from a range of arts projects, health services and community groups. This was a combined event between CHAOS (Creative, Heritage and Arts Organisations of Southampton) and the Southampton Art In Health Forum. We all shared a little bit about ourselves.

We talked about how we could work together in terms of sharing what we’ve got, want and need:

  • Matt from SoCo Music Project talked about some training he is offering, all about how trauma impacts on behaviour.
  • Will from All About Art is planning some community engagement mosaic making work in Vanguard Road, Townhill, looking for residents to get involved.
  • Rebecca mentioned the Postcode Community Trust, which supports projects around improving health and increasing participation in the arts. The deadline for this round is Tues 4 Feb, so get your skates on.
  • Nicola did a shout out for visual artist to get involved with Horton Heath development in Eastleigh. Contact Eastleigh Borough Council.

The next CHAOS meeting will be 2 March. For more details, ask to join the CHAOS network mailing list.

We are also fixing the date for the next Southampton Art in Health Forum. Sign up to these email newsletters for updates by contacting Rebecca at Southampton Collective or follow the forum on Facebook.

We talked about Southampton’s hope to bid for City of Culture 2025. A Bid Director will be appointed soon. Over the next year, the people of Southampton will have more opportunities to be part of the bid, and a theme will be chosen. Watch out for an event in late Spring.

During the meeting we talked about what type of theme Southampton’s City of Culture bid should adopt. There is certainly plenty of enthusiasm for it to have a health theme. Suggestions around social prescribing (referring patients to non-clinical services to help with their wellbeing), air quality and addressing health inequalities through culture were all ideas put forward.

We also talked about a series of festivals in May with a creative health theme:

Dead Good Days, a Southampton-based festival all about death and dying. Deb and Chris told us all about the range of events.

Plus UK-wide festivals Age of Creativity, Get Creative and Creative Health and Wellbeing Week. Here’s a chance for local events to get national publicity and get more local people engaged in health-giving creative activity. More on all of these events on our previous blog.

Rebecca has offered to put together a list of all the Southampton-based May events with a creativity and health theme that people want to share. Some events are already programmed, and others are going to be planned over the next few weeks. There’s also interest in putting on an event with a theme of creativity, mental health and young people.

If you want to share news of events that you know about, to be added to the Southampton Art In Health Forum mailing list, of be involved in future activity please get in contact with Rebecca.
